Amniotic membranes are a valuable tool to promote healing and reducing ocular surface inflammation. We use them to manage persistent defects in the front layer of the eye alled the epithelium. Damage to this layer can occur for a number of reasons such as recurrent corneal erosion, nerve damage to the cornea, exposure – such as incomplete closure of the eyelid. Amnoitic membranes are also useful in moderate to severe dry eye disease and also occasionally for pain relief.
